National Spiritual Bankruptcy"The strength or weakness of a society depends more on the level of its spiritual life than on its level of industrialization. Neither a market economy nor even general abundance constitute the crowning achievement of human life. If a nation's spiritual energies have been exhausted, it will not be saved from collapse by the most perfect government structure or by any industrial development. A tree with a rotten core cannot stand." Alexander Solzhenitsyn. For a nation to survive, it must have a solid foundation. The only foundation that can withstand the attacks from without and within is a solid spiritual foundation. Our founding fathers sought to give us such a salvation. These are the words of John Adams. "Our Constitution was designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other." Perhaps this is the reason why in recent years we have heard that there are those who want to rewrite the Constitution. We no longer qualify as a moral and religious people. James Madison, the chief architect of the Constitution said, "We have staked the whole of our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind to govern themselves according to the Ten Commandments of God" These men understood something which as a nation we seem to have forgotten or rejected. They understood that democracy and righteousness are linked together. Leading educators and the media have sought to tell us that values do not matter, that one value is as good as another, that everyone should be free to do his own thing ("self-actualization" they call it). In other words, they favor and promote the removing of restraints. Men no longer want social or moral restraints. They certainly do not want restraints which are based upon God's word. Unrestrained passions lead to crime, violence and ultimately anarchy. It is outrageous that the government is taking tax money to sponsor art which glorifies perversion. The U.S. Government also contributes millions of dollars every year to a so-called "family planning organization" which vigorously opposes the teaching of abstinence in the public schools. They claim that it is unrealistic to expect young people to reserve sex until marriage, and abstinence is a religious value which promotes the concept of God and moral absolutes; which ought not to be taught in the public schools. The logical conclusion to such moral insanity is this. If abstinence is to be disallowed in the public schools because it is a religious value, then teaching students that it wrong to murder must also be forbidden because "thou shalt not kill" is also a religious value. We must not teach children that it is wrong to steal because "thou shalt not steal" is also a religious value. We must not teach children to respect their parents because "honor thy father and mother" is also a religious value. It is time that we insist on restoring the spiritual foundation of this nation, even if it isn't politically correct. Les Walthers is Pastor of the Grace Reformed Baptist Church.
