Frankenstein’s Monster

by Glenn R. Jackson

Mary Shelly’s literary masterpiece “Frankenstein” is the story of a man’s studied blow against the natural order, as Dr. Victor Frankenstein brings to unnatural life his “monster”.  There have been some who have argued since September 11th that the attacks on this nation are a monster of our nations own creation.

One such is former President Clinton, who is resuming his “blame America First” tour.  As usual, the former President is making the answer far more complicated then it needs to be.  For as we slice away his lawyerly complexities we will see that “is” still means “is”, and former President Clinton “is” culpable for much of our September 11th pain.

However, Clinton is too much the happy opportunist to be the true creator of this monster.  No, while Clinton was a willing participant in this, as he was in his many other misadventures, he is not its creator.  No, neither Clinton nor the Clintonian explanations are close to the true answer for our September 11th monster.

Closer to the truth is the argument about foreign entanglements.  Our nations Founding Fathers warned about becoming embroiled too deeply in the quarrels of the world.  Even the Bible cautions us to “be of the world, but not in the world.”

Our current policies seem to run counter to the urgings of former President Reagan for America to be a “shining light on a hill”, providing an alternative for the world’s choosing.  Instead we have moved down the path of former President Bush “the elder’s” New World Order where America is the arbiter, resolver, and guarantor of the world’s peace and prosperity.

President Reagan’s approach led to the fall of the Soviet Union.  The elder Bush has led to an enemy to the death in Saddam Hussein, and an opening for Clinton to give us the disasters in Somalia and Haiti.   As well as the ludicrous intervention on behalf of Kosovo’s Moslem population and the Kosovo Liberation Army’s Islamic terrorist, many of who serve in Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network and are being bombed by the same planes that protected them in Kosovo.

“Come into my parlor,” said the spider to the fly.

How did we come from the “shining light on the hill” to fighting and dying in the streets of Somalia against people we came to feed and save, killing over 500 and losing 18 of our own?

Our Dr. Frankenstein is the business elites of our American corporations and multinationals.  With an arrogance that comes from their success in the most blessed nation on earth, and a short-sighted adherence to all concepts of the bottom-line.  America’s business elites see all the world as a labor pool, and free trade as being free of all loyalty and constraint.  The American multinationals no longer care about you, about me, or about this nation.  They care only about the “value added” to the corporate bottom-line and to the mollifying effects of stock prices.

For the business elites open borders imports cheap labor, “fast-track” trade authorization narrows their lobbying efforts, and free trade opens distribution channels.   In these matters the U.S. Congress is Dr. Frankenstein’s willing lapdog.

Are you not just a little curious about why President Bush, God love him for his strength, is asking Americans to buy, instead of asking Americans to build? Can’t you just see the warehouses in China, Malaysia, and Mexico filling with the manufactured goods of cheap labor, waiting for the “sleeping giant” of America to awaken and consume again!

The fuel for this New World Order monster is the massive consumer might of the United States.  Unfortunately for Dr. Frankenstein, he is forced to build his NWO “monster” from a humanity that is not graced with the blessings of American ideals and principles.  The clash of civilizations is as old as the earth itself, and Frankenstein can’t change that.  So he turns to American military might to make the world “safe to do business”, but finds that the world knows how to fight back.

On September 11th the NWO “monster” turned on Frankenstein, yet blinded by arrogance and greed Frankenstein changes not.  God help us all.
